Roman Empire - Middle Ages - Modern Times
|
|
The Roman collection is as old as the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum itself because already in the founding year of 1833, two figural gravestones that were set into a wall of Linz Castle, arrived at the museum by way of verbal order of Emperor Franz I. on the occasion of his stay in Linz.
From the beginnings of the museum starting in 1833 and lasting for about 50 years, the outstanding scholarly personality of the historian and classicist Josef Gaisberger shaped the research work of the collection. After World War II till 1984, Univ.-Prof Dr. Eckhart led the collection and until 1963 also co-administered the ancient and early history collection. Under his leadership, ancient and Roman history were separated. Since today the department also covers the archaeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times, we use the short designation "archaeology" for this area of the collection.

Areas covered and research projects | |
|
Since Lothar Eckhart already the emphasis of the research work has been the Upper Austrian Danube Limes in Roman times and Early Christianity in Upper Austria, as well as estates and Roman gravestones and generally all facets of Roman times.
Since Lothar Eckhart church excavations have also been carried out, in this way forming the foundation of the Middle Ages archaeology collection, which was then systematically enlarged.
Today excavations in all these areas, i.e. Roman villa research, military installations, castle and church excavations, and glassworks, are carried out. An important area of research in the Roman times is the Upper Austrian Danube Limes and Early Christianity in Upper Austria. In the area of Middle Ages archaeology, emphasis is on archaeological research of castles, glassworks and churches.
Activities include cooperating in or organizing ourselves relevant exhibits, determination of findings, information, and giving advice to regional researchers.
Current excavations and research projects:
Turntobel excavation, Kefermarkt/Neumarkt. A castle system of the Late Middle Ages in the Mühlviertel region.
