The art collections of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum owe their present richness to a series of benefactors, starting with the St. Florian monastery, which in 1835 laid the basis for the important gothic collection. Important donations and bequests followed, up to the recent purchase of a tablet by the Master of Mondsee with the assistance of sponsors.
The emphasis is on art from Upper Austria, supplemented by a small but elite collection of Italian and Dutch works. The Ried and Linz crucifixions, the Eggelsberg Altar and the Works of Mercy, the John’s Platter by the Master of Mauer, and the works by the Master of the Altötting Doors are among the high points of the gothic collection. From the renaissance and baroque, the sculptures by Spindler, Zürn und Schwanthaler, as well as the paintings by Hemessen, Altomonte and Kremser Schmidt are to be emphasized. Particularly richly represented are paintings of the Viennese Biedermeier, the Makart period and Stimmungsimpressionismus (“mood impressionism”), with an emphasis on the paintings of J. B. Reiter. The planned extension of the museum by building a south wing will make it possible to enlarge the collection greatly and also to display 20th century art.
At present the collection covers over 2500 paintings and about 1200 sculptures. At first the holdings were only related to Upper Austria; then in 1898 they were internationalized by way of a bequest of Count Ludolf. In 1970 the Pierer collection was acquired, offering an excellent overview of 19th century Viennese painting. In 1975 the Kastner donation followed; it contains over 1000 objects from the late Middle Ages to modern times.
Research and publications:
The art department concerns itself with all aspects of the collection and also sees itself contact point for research into regional studies. Greatest possible variety was aimed for in the exhibits. The most extensive project to date concerned gothic in Upper Austria (11 exhibits and five publications so far). Next project: Maximilian Liebenwein, a painter between Impressionism and Art Nouveau, starting 29 August 2006 in Linz and Castle Steyregg. On the occasion of the exhibit, the first monograph of the artist will appear.
