The documentation of Upper Austria’s military history is also one of the jobs of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum.
The military history collection has only existed since the 1960s and resulted from taking over the rest inventory of the former Hessen museum as well as that of the museum of former “Zweier-Schützen” (infantrymen). In addition were added all military history objects from the collection of historical weapons.
Therefore, the holdings now cover objects connected with the military units formerly stationed in Upper Austria.
Events like the conquest of Linz by Count Khevenhüller in 1742 and the meeting of Ebelsberg in 1809 are not the only topics presented. From the viewpoint of local history, the figurines representing members of all branches of service garrisoned in Upper Austria must also be mentioned.
Furthermore troop uniforms form an important area of the collection, as do the weapons and siege technology, which are displayed in the form of models and pictures. The developmental stages of the rifle from approximately 1700 to the present are illustrated, whereby above all the Werndl rifle and the Steyr weapons factory find consideration.
A small portrait gallery rounds off the military history collection.
