. The Provincial Studies Collection

The Provincial Studies Collection contains a series of photograph inheritances that document the historical development of the province of Upper Austria.

In 1986 the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum bought the approximately 5000 photographic plates from the inheritance of the professional photographer Kasper Obermayr (1876-1954) of Freistadt. They include primarily images of the city of Freistadt with its medieval defence systems, towns and landscapes of the district of Freistadt and the lower Mühlviertel, and a collection of portraits of personalities from Freistadt.

The collection was supplemented by photographic plates from 1890 to 1930 of the former Bad Ischl savings bank director, Anton Brandis. The photographs show images from Bad Ischl and its surroundings; the original labelled covers have also been preserved.

A recent acquisition (negatives and large-sized enlargements) contains the inheritance of the Hans Georg Prillinger of Gmunden, who in the 1960s photographed all the important artistic personalities of Upper Austria.
